Evidence of the decline of American civilization? For all their technology the American people may be becoming dumb and dumber in general. Fortunately the gospel isn't about high levels of intelligence or complexity structured by the if/then forms of logic that all notions of law and order rest on. It doesn't take intelligence to understand that one is a sinner in need of salvation, especially when the mysterious ordering principle of life within our being dissipates in old age and death. Ironically, the intelligent and wealthy actually have a harder time understanding their need for salvation because they are more capable of ordering their lives and providing for themselves or inventing stories in which it isn't so. But then they die.

Daughters longing to give birth to the gods of old these days...

Perhaps it would be simpler to observe that the demon gods of old invariably lead people toward their own type of categorical perversion of the order of things. They left their place in the true version of things to become perverts and so they tend to make people in their own likeness. The categorical distinction that they violated and perverted was that between man who is "little lower than the angels" and angels/gods, which according to the great theologian Katy Perry can be imagined to live in a different part of electromagnetic spectrum and possess a sort of animal magnetism.*   Artists seem to like to try to engrave gods of this sort in their imagery, if not directly on their own image by piercing and marking themselves like the prophets of Baal of old.

People who sing to the old gods and long for them and worship them and so on tend to do the same thing as their gods in our realm in violating basic natural categories as we know them.  Even if they were deceived into thinking that a different basic order to things existed, they would willfully violate that too.  People who long for gods of that sort and sing to them tend toward perverting the distinctions between male and female (homophilia), child and adult (pedophilia), human and animal (zoophilia) and so on in their own realm. It doesn't have to be a sexual perversion but that is often how it is expressed, as is illustrated in the graven imagery on pyramid schemes of the past as well as in the "new" music videos of American artists.

We're a long way from not wearing mixed fabrics and so on to uphold basic distinctions or to be a ceremonially ordered people set apart these days. On the other hand, "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3)  Thus the death of perversion and the symbolic snakes that eat their own tales.  It's all symbolic, except when it's literally time to exit the current scheme of things.

(The writing is on the wall for Lucifer the light bearer, the one who falls like a bolt of lightning.  American artists could sing about anything in the brave new world, yet they sing of ancient symbols and signs.  There is nothing new under the sun.)
